Writing
At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, we believe that writing is a powerful means of communication and creativity that enables every child to express themselves, share ideas and engage with the world. Through a well-structured and ambitious English curriculum, pupils develop the technical accuracy, confidence and imagination needed to become skilled, thoughtful writers.
Our sequenced curriculum builds progressively from the foundations of spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) to the crafting of extended, purposeful writing. Each unit revisits and deepens prior learning, ensuring that knowledge is securely embedded and applied across genres and subjects. Pupils learn to write with accuracy, fluency and style, making deliberate language choices to suit different audiences and purposes.
We have high expectations for all pupils, including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged. Adaptive teaching, clear modelling and scaffolded support ensure that every child can experience success as a writer. We focus on developing oral language and vocabulary as the building blocks of written expression, providing the tools pupils need to construct and refine their ideas with confidence.
Our curriculum promotes the development of cultural capital through exposure to rich and varied texts that inspire writing and broaden perspectives. Pupils explore diverse authors, voices and contexts, helping them to appreciate the beauty and power of language in shaping culture and identity.
Writing lessons are purposeful, engaging and interconnected with reading. Pupils learn to edit, redraft and improve their work, taking pride in their achievements and striving for precision and creativity in equal measure.
We will know our curriculum is successful when all pupils can communicate effectively in writing—using accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar—and when they see themselves as confident, capable writers who use language to inform, persuade, entertain and inspire.
