Science

At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, our Science curriculum fosters curiosity, creativity and a sense of wonder about the world. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, methods and vocabulary to understand key scientific concepts and processes, and to recognise the power of science in explaining, predicting and analysing the world around them.

Our sequenced curriculum builds progressively from Early Years to Year 6, ensuring pupils develop secure understanding of the three scientific disciplines — biology, chemistry and physics. Concepts are revisited and built upon over time, allowing pupils to deepen their knowledge, make connections between topics and apply their learning to new contexts. Working scientifically is embedded throughout, enabling pupils to develop enquiry skills such as observation, prediction, investigation and evaluation.

We maintain high expectations for all learners. Our inclusive approach ensures that pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged are supported to achieve success in science. Lessons are designed to be accessible and engaging through practical, hands-on exploration, visual aids and targeted scaffolding, while providing challenge and stretch for all learners to reach their full potential.

Our curriculum develops cultural capital by helping pupils understand how science has shaped our world and continues to influence everyday life. Pupils learn about significant scientists — past and present — from diverse backgrounds, broadening their appreciation of human achievement and innovation. Real-life applications, outdoor learning and cross-curricular links deepen pupils’ understanding and show how science connects with technology, the environment and society.

By the time pupils leave Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, they will have:

  • Gained secure scientific knowledge and understanding across all areas of the curriculum;

  • Developed curiosity, critical thinking and enquiry skills through hands-on investigation;

  • Learned to question, test and analyse evidence to draw conclusions;

  • Built resilience, teamwork and communication skills through collaborative experiments;

  • Developed an appreciation of the importance of science in improving lives and protecting our planet.

Through our Science curriculum, pupils become inquisitive, reflective and knowledgeable learners — equipped with the skills and understanding to explore, question and make sense of the world around them.
