Art & Design

At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, our Art & Design curriculum inspires, engages and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We believe that every child is an artist and that creativity is a vital part of a broad and balanced education.

Our carefully sequenced curriculum builds knowledge and skills progressively from Early Years to Year 6, ensuring pupils develop mastery in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. Through explicit teaching of artistic vocabulary, knowledge of great artists and exposure to a wide range of media and styles, pupils deepen their understanding of how art reflects and shapes our history and culture.

We are committed to high expectations for all, ensuring that every pupil — including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged — can access, enjoy and achieve in Art & Design. Adaptive teaching, scaffolding, and the use of multi-sensory approaches enable all learners to express themselves creatively and succeed.

Our curriculum promotes cultural capital by exposing pupils to a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople from different cultures, times and backgrounds. This helps pupils appreciate art as a universal form of human expression and develop a sense of identity and belonging.

By the time pupils leave Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, they will have:

  • Developed technical proficiency and creative confidence;
  • Gained a deep understanding of key artistic concepts and techniques;
  • Built resilience and independence through experimentation and reflection;
  • Learned to evaluate and appreciate art in its many forms;
  • Experienced the joy of creating and expressing themselves through art.

Through this, our pupils will be well-prepared for the next stage of their education — as confident, creative individuals with a lifelong appreciation of art and design.
