Geography

At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, our geography curriculum inspires pupils to develop a deep curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We want our pupils to become knowledgeable, responsible global citizens who understand their place in the world and the impact they can have upon it.

Our sequenced curriculum builds progressively from Early Years to Year 6, enabling pupils to develop secure locational and place knowledge, geographical skills and an understanding of human and physical processes. Each unit builds upon prior learning to ensure pupils make meaningful connections between concepts such as climate, settlement, sustainability and diversity.

We have high expectations for all learners. Our curriculum is designed to be fully inclusive, ensuring that pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged are supported and challenged to achieve their full potential. Adaptive teaching, practical learning experiences, and visual resources help all pupils access complex geographical ideas and vocabulary.

Through the study of diverse people, places and environments, pupils gain valuable cultural capital. They develop respect for different cultures, appreciation of global interdependence, and a sense of responsibility for the future of our planet. Fieldwork experiences — both within the local area and beyond — help pupils apply their learning, develop enquiry skills and deepen their understanding of geographical concepts in context.

By the time pupils leave Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, they will have:

  • Developed secure knowledge of the world’s key physical and human features;

  • Built geographical enquiry and mapping skills;

  • Learned to ask perceptive questions, analyse evidence and communicate findings effectively;

  • Understood the relationships between people, places and environments;

  • Fostered curiosity, care and respect for the world around them.

Through our Geography curriculum, pupils become informed, inquisitive and thoughtful citizens, well-prepared to engage with and contribute to the wider world.
