Spanish (MFL)

At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, our Spanish curriculum aims to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the wider world. We believe that learning a foreign language is a vital part of preparing pupils to become global citizens — equipping them with communication skills, cultural awareness and a sense of connection beyond their immediate community.

Our sequenced curriculum ensures that pupils progressively develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish from Year 3 to Year 6. Knowledge of key vocabulary, grammatical structures and pronunciation builds cumulatively over time, enabling pupils to use the language with increasing confidence and independence. Lessons are engaging, practical and interactive, designed to make language learning enjoyable and meaningful.

We have high expectations for all learners. Our inclusive approach ensures that pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged can access and succeed in Spanish. Adaptive teaching, visual supports, repetition and multi-sensory approaches enable all pupils to participate fully and achieve success. Challenge and enrichment are provided for fluent and confident learners to extend their language use and cultural understanding.

Our curriculum promotes cultural capital by introducing pupils to the rich traditions, customs and geography of Spanish-speaking countries. Through authentic stories, songs, festivals and cultural experiences, pupils develop an appreciation of diversity and a respect for other cultures, broadening their horizons and fostering empathy and curiosity about the world.

By the time pupils leave Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, they will have:

  • Developed the ability to understand and communicate simple ideas in spoken and written Spanish;

  • Gained an understanding of basic grammatical structures and pronunciation;

  • Built confidence and enjoyment in language learning;

  • Developed curiosity, respect and appreciation for other cultures;

  • Acquired foundational skills that will prepare them for further language study at secondary school.

Through our Spanish curriculum, pupils become confident, open-minded and culturally aware communicators — equipped with the language skills and global perspective needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
