Mathematics

At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, our Mathematics curriculum aims to equip all pupils with a deep, secure and adaptable understanding of number, reasoning and problem-solving. We believe that every child can achieve in mathematics and that it is an essential foundation for success in education, employment and everyday life.

Our sequenced curriculum is built around small, carefully structured steps that develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving in a coherent and connected way. Learning builds cumulatively from Early Years to Year 6, allowing pupils to secure fundamental knowledge before moving on to more complex concepts. This mastery approach ensures pupils develop confidence, accuracy and flexibility in applying mathematical skills to new situations.

We hold high expectations for all learners. Every pupil — including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged — is supported and challenged to reach their full potential. Adaptive teaching, precise questioning and the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations ensure all pupils can access learning and deepen their understanding. Interventions are used effectively to close gaps and promote equity of achievement.

Our curriculum also develops cultural capital by helping pupils see the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and across the curriculum. Pupils explore how mathematics underpins science, technology, art, architecture, finance and nature, recognising its universal importance and the role it plays in shaping our world.

By the time pupils leave Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, they will have:

  • Developed a secure understanding of key mathematical concepts and procedures;

  • Built fluency in number and confidence in manipulating mathematical ideas;

  • Strengthened reasoning and problem-solving skills through rich, challenging tasks;

  • Learned to communicate their mathematical thinking clearly using appropriate vocabulary;

  • Gained resilience, independence and a positive attitude towards mathematics.

Through our Mathematics curriculum, pupils become confident, reflective and capable mathematicians — equipped with the knowledge, skills and mindset to succeed in the next stage of their learning and beyond.
