Music
At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, our Music curriculum aims to inspire a lifelong love of music and foster creativity, self-expression and confidence. We believe that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity and provides every pupil — regardless of background or ability — with opportunities to shine.
Our sequenced curriculum is carefully planned from Early Years to Year 6 to ensure pupils build musical knowledge and skills progressively. Pupils learn to listen with discrimination, perform with confidence, compose creatively and understand how music is structured. They develop an understanding of musical notation, rhythm, pitch, dynamics and tempo, as well as how music reflects and shapes different times, places and cultures.
We have high expectations for all learners. Our inclusive approach ensures that pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged have equitable access to musical experiences and opportunities. Adaptive teaching, varied resources and practical, multisensory approaches enable all pupils to participate fully, enjoy success and develop their musical potential.
Our curriculum enriches cultural capital by exposing pupils to a diverse range of musical genres, traditions and composers from across the world. Pupils explore music from different cultures and historical periods, helping them to appreciate the diversity of human creativity and expression. Opportunities for performance — in assemblies, concerts and community events — allow pupils to share their learning, build confidence and take pride in their achievements.
By the time pupils leave Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, they will have:
-
Developed the ability to listen to, appraise and perform music with increasing skill and understanding;
-
Gained the confidence to express themselves through singing, playing and composing;
-
Understood how music connects people, places and cultures;
-
Built perseverance, teamwork and creativity through collaborative music-making;
-
Developed an appreciation for the value and joy that music brings to life.
Through our Music curriculum, pupils become confident, creative and reflective musicians — equipped with the knowledge, skills and appreciation to enjoy and engage with music throughout their lives.
