Design & Technology
At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, our Design & Technology (D&T) curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, skills and creativity to design, make and evaluate purposeful products that solve real and relevant problems. We aim to develop confident, innovative thinkers who are not only imaginative but also practical, resilient and reflective.
Our sequenced curriculum builds progressively from Early Years to Year 6, enabling pupils to acquire and apply technical knowledge, design principles and making skills in a structured and coherent way. Each unit is carefully planned to revisit and deepen prior learning, allowing pupils to build upon their understanding of materials, mechanisms, structures, textiles, and food technology over time.
We maintain high expectations for all learners. Our D&T curriculum is fully inclusive, ensuring that pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged are supported through adaptive teaching, practical exploration and scaffolding that enables every child to succeed. Challenge is built into lessons to stretch all pupils’ creativity and problem-solving skills, ensuring equity of access and aspiration.
Through engaging, hands-on projects, pupils develop valuable cultural capital, learning how design and technology influence our everyday lives and reflect the cultures and values of different communities around the world. They are introduced to influential designers, engineers, architects and innovators from diverse backgrounds, helping them appreciate the global impact of design and technological progress.
By the time pupils leave Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, they will have:
-
Developed creativity, technical competence and critical thinking skills;
-
Understood and applied the design, make and evaluate process with increasing independence;
-
Gained practical experience with tools, materials and digital technologies safely and confidently;
-
Learned how design and innovation contribute to improving lives and solving problems;
-
Built resilience, teamwork and resourcefulness through iterative design challenges.
Through our D&T curriculum, pupils become imaginative designers, confident makers and thoughtful evaluators — equipped with the curiosity, creativity and skills to shape and improve the world around them.
