History

Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School

At Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, our History curriculum inspires pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and understand how it has shaped the world we live in today. We aim to develop pupils’ historical knowledge, enquiry skills and sense of identity, enabling them to think critically about evidence, change, cause, similarity, difference and significance.

Our sequenced curriculum is carefully structured from Early Years to Year 6 to build a coherent understanding of local, British and world history. Knowledge and concepts are revisited and deepened over time, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections across different periods, civilisations and themes. This cumulative approach ensures pupils develop secure historical knowledge alongside chronological understanding and analytical thinking.

We hold high expectations for all learners. Our inclusive approach ensures that pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged can access and achieve success in History. Adaptive teaching, visual and narrative supports, and the use of artefacts, stories and role play help bring the past to life for every learner, fostering engagement and understanding.

Our curriculum enriches cultural capital by exposing pupils to diverse people, cultures and historical perspectives. Pupils learn about the contributions of individuals and groups from different backgrounds, developing respect, empathy and a broad appreciation of human achievement and struggle. Visits, workshops and historical artefacts further strengthen their understanding and make learning memorable.

By the time pupils leave Carr Hill Primary & Nursery School, they will have:

  • Developed a secure chronological understanding of British, local and world history;

  • Learned to ask perceptive questions and think critically about sources and evidence;

  • Understood how key events and individuals have shaped societies and influenced change;

  • Gained insight into continuity, change, cause and consequence;

  • Built respect for diversity, heritage and the complexity of human experience.

Through our History curriculum, pupils become thoughtful, inquisitive and informed learners — equipped to make sense of the world around them and their place within it.
