1st April 2019

Maths: This week in Maths we have completed our unit on Fractions. We have continued to solve problems with different fractions using bar models and our hot tasks are impressing Mrs Hilton-Loom as she can see the progress that we have made.

English: We have started to look at different non-chronological reports this week and have learned an example text “How a Jellyfish stings” to help us with this. We have really impressed with our retelling of the text and our identification of technical vocab. We have then used this understanding to generate ideas that we can use for our own non-chronological reports that will be about the Viking gods.

The most interesting part of our work this week was our PE lesson. We have really impressed with our improved confidence and skills in gymnastics over the past few weeks. There are definitely some very flexible people in our class!

Well done to the two girls who have gained their silver presentation licences this week and to the other children who have achieved their bronze awards. Who will be next?

Maths: We have continued to work with fractions – this week our focus has been finding fractions of amounts using word problems. We are slowly getting to understand the role that a bar model can have in helping us to solve these types of questions. However a more confident group of us found we were really challenged when we were faced with fractions questions using different denominators – we have found it really difficult to get our heads around the fact that we need to find the equivalent fractions before we can solve the question. We are slowly understanding the reasons behind this, but a little more practise is needed we think.

English: Well it’s been another busy week and we’ve worked hard to write our newspaper articles about the battle between Fenrir and Thor in the story Arthur and the Golden Rope. WE have found it quite tricky to understand the differences between a report and a story but, with persistence and patience, we have succeeded and our writing reflects our increasing understanding.

The most interesting part of our work this week was Open Morning. Unfortunately no one came to visit us although we did spend an enjoyable hour and a half sewing our Viking pictures ready for Viking afternoon on the last afternoon of the term. Hope to see some of you there.

Our Star of the Week this week is Amelia for all her hard work and effort. She can be relied upon in class to always try her best but she can also be relied upon to do the same at home and this needs rewarding. Thank you Amelia for being your very conscientious, hard-working self. Keep it up as you are reaping the rewards of it.

18th March 2019

Maths: This week we have continued to work on our understanding of fractions – using bar models to find non-unit fractions of amounts. We are certainly finding the bar models useful as it is sometimes as bit tricky to work out what number to put in the bars but with perseverance we are certainly making progress.

English: Our work has continued to focus around our newspapers this week – we have dramatized the scene from Arthur and the Golden Rope when the battle happens and we have interviewed the by-standers and the characters who were involved so we should be able to write our newspapers full of quotes and dramatic detail next week.

The most enjoyable part of our work this week was Comic Relief – we all dressed up in red, enjoyed our Red Nose Day biscuits and had a fun Comic Relief Quiz – Daniel and Matthew (4JW) came joint first with Mrs Hilton and Miss Burgess with a score of 13. Well done to the two boys.


Our Star of the Week this week is Owen for his willingness to persevere to ensure that he succeeds at a task. Well done Owen, this positive attitude will get you results in the long term – keep it up!

11th March 2019

Well this has been a busy week with a visit to a mosque in Sheffield, World Book Day, a treasure hunt and a quiz!

Maths: This week we cracked equivalent fractions and are now really confident at not only growing fractions by doubling but also reducing them and using other multiples. We’re really cooking with gas – watch out for more cracking work next week!

English: In English we have started to work on our targets around newspapers and how to structure our sentences. So far we’ve really impressed with EdIngLy starters but found apostrophes for possession a bit tricky. Because of this, we had a treasure hunt today and really reinforced our understanding of how to form possessive apostrophes with plural words and irregular plurals which were the ones that really caused us a headache.

World Book Day: as well as dressing up in our pjs, listening beautifully to different teachers reading stories, eating biscuits and sharing our favourite books with parents (thanks to the two Mums for coming in), we also had a newspaper quiz. Mr Haslam had created a quiz with different nursery rhymes being described through a newspaper headline – we had to work out the nursery rhyme. Hopefully this will help us next week when we are starting to think about our own headlines.

The most interesting part of our work this week was our visit to the mosque in Sheffield. There were lots of ooohs and ahhhhs as we approached the mosque and gained our first glimpse. This continued as we went inside. Mrs Hilton-Loom was really proud of the way we conducted ourselves and the thoughtful questions that we asked.

Our Star of the Week this week is Kye, not only for his enthusiasm at the mosque, but also for his careful explanations of whether a word needs ‘s or s’ to show possession. Keep up the great work Kye.

4th March 2019

Maths: This week we have moved onto our fractions topic. We have already shown that we can remember quite a lot from out previous fractions learning and are well on our way to achieving our target of adding and subtracting fractions. We have, however, found it quite tricky to spot how fractions can be equivalent to one another. To help us with this, we looked at several optical illusions to help us understand how we need to change our focus with fractions. This is really starting to help us see the similarities.

English: In English we have also started a new topic – newspaper writing. We have studied different newspaper articles and can now identify what features newspapers have in common. We have really enjoyed cutting up and identifying the different parts of the newspaper including the byline, the caption, the 5 Ws as well as the more obvious features.

The most interesting part of our work this week was baking and trying Viking bread. Some of us really enjoyed eating the bread that we had made (thanks to Mrs Higginbottom or Mrs Sampson) while others thought that it was gritty and unpleasant!

Our Star of the Week this week is Jake for the effort that he is particularly putting into all his writing – he is trying hard with his presentation and the content of his writing, trying hard to follow teaching points and improvements. Keep up the hard work Jake and now start to work on the presentation in your maths book as well.
