A PROMISED LAND – The Mayflower Children

An interpretation by Barry Upton

SONG 1 Living in the Shadows.     MUSIC

Living in the sha-dows, living in the dark;
At every step - we fall onto the floor.
Living in the sha-dows, hiding in our homes;
Dreading every knock - - upon the door.

We see the passing shadows - move a-cross the wall;
We feel the fear and hide beneath our beds.
We see the passing shadows, hear their noisy shouts;
Their angry voices - - inside our heads.
MUSIC
Living in the sha-dows, living in the dark;
At every step - we fall onto the floor.
Living in the sha-dows, hiding in our homes;
Dreading every knock - - upon the door.

We watch our parents’ faces as shadows pass by;
We see the fear - that lies behind their eyes.
They tell us not to worry, our lives will all be fine,
We see the shadows -  there behind the lies.
MUSIC
Living in the sha- dows, living in the dark;
At every step we fall onto the floor.
Living in the shadows, hiding in our homes;
Dreading every knock - upon the door.

SONG 2 White and Blue     MUSIC

The mayflower is so pure and white; the speedwell is so blue;
Like clouds across a perfect sky; the colours that we knew.
The white and blue of freedom that will help us sail away.
The Mayflower and The Speedwell - our ships wait in the bay.
MUSIC
Our captains have arrived and it’s time to go aboard;
Our ships are ready, off we go and leave behind our world.
The white and blue of freedom that will help us sail away.
The Mayflower and The Speedwell – our ships wait in the bay.
MUSIC
We leave behind us all we know, we leave behind our friends.
We sail towards Virginia - we have to start again.
The white and blue of freedom that will help us sail away.
The Mayflower and The Speedwell – our ships wait in the bay.
MUSIC
We take what little goods we have, some clothes, some books and toys,
We sail the mighty ocean – we little girls and boys.
The white and blue of freedom that will help us sail away.
The Mayflower and The Speedwell – our ships wait in the bay.

SONG 3 The Promised Land    MUSIC

The Promised Land, The Promised Land
We’ve arrived in our - own promised land
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
Yes, we’ve arrived in our - own promised land.

We’ve arrived - in these far distant shores;
Our homes our friends, they lie behind;
Though the storms raged and blew out over the sea,
We’ve arrived in our - own promised land.
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
We’ve arrived in our - own promised land
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
Yes we’ve arrived in our - own promised land

Our journey’s over, our battle it is done;
We’ll settle and - build all around;
We followed the sun - from east to the west;
We’ve arrived in our - own promised land.
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
We’ve arrived in our - own promised land
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
Yes we’ve arrived in our - own promised land

This land of our dreams - has become soil and clay;
We come here and trust - to God’s hand –
Fall to our knees and give thanks to the Lord,
Who has brought us our - own promised land.
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
We’ve arrived in our - own promised land
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
Yes we’ve  arrived in our - own promised land
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
Yes, we’ve arrived in our own promised land
The Promised Land, The Promised Land
Yes, we’ve arrived in our - own promised land.
